I was reminded today, while catching up with an old friend, of my “why”. I get caught up in the day to day of building my business, and although I know my “why”, I love to be reminded of it. The reason I felt called to be a writer and Life Coach was to help people, and even more specifically to empower and inspire people.
What I was reminded of today, was my journey, in my youth I always wanted to help people, but thought that rescuing them was the only way to help. This took me through a number of relationships, both romantic and platonic that involved me attempting to rescue someone. Seeing a person’s challenges as something I could “help” with.
It wasn’t until much later in my life that I realized that the only way for ME to truly help anyone is to empower them. To help shine a light on who they truly are and how amazing they are. This shift really changed me as a person. I began to focus much less on how I could change another person’s life, to living my own life in the most empowered way I could.
I was reminded of this today, as I took a bit of a journey back through my own life, remembering the relationships and how much each shaped me. What stands out to me is the fact that I’ve never really framed it in this way before. How I grew when I became aware that it was not my responsibility to help change someone, nor was I actually helping them. However, when I shifted to how can I empower a person, how can I shine a light on their greatness, that is when real change started. It really had nothing to do with anything I DID. It simply was me seeing the goodness in someone that made all the difference.
By feeling empowered in my own life, I could readily see the other person’s light shining back.
When a light is shone on your greatness, it gives you the ability to rise up and stand in your own power. When you believe in your own greatness then you can do amazing things in this world. Far too many people choose to stay in the dark with their shadows, and fumble around looking for small pieces of light. Our own goodness, our own power, our own light is always there, we only have to open our eyes and see what great and amazing beings we are.
You have probably heard the quote “be the change that you want to see in the world”, it’s really sound advice. What isn’t really clear is that when you are empowered, you are the light. Your light falls upon every person you meet. It’s an invisible gift that you give.
P.S. If you are ready to shine your light, I’d love to chat with you.
