When I was studying Expressive Arts Therapy, we did an exercise where we danced around the room to music and looked for patterns in our movement. After a bit of free dancing, we dialed in on one pattern and repeated it over and over to feel what it felt like to repeat it, and then to look for what we could discern from the movement, what was it trying to tell us. Then we dropped the movement and moved on, back to free dancing, and looking for another repetitive movement, repeating the same analysis. What was most interesting is that after repeating the pattern and discovering something from it, and dropping it, it was no longer a pattern that repeated often if at all.
It is very much the same with thought patterns. Where in your daily thoughts do you repeat the same pattern? What can you learn from it, and then drop it. Just to help you uncover these patterns a bit. Observe your thought for an hour, or do three pages of free writing, see what repeats even once. Then single that thought out, repeat it several times or write it 10 times and ask yourself, how is this thought serving me? How does this thought keep me safe? How is this thought holding me back? See what you get from it? Write it down, and honor that…say thank you. Then drop it. Create a new thought in it’s place, one that you design. Repeat that or write it 10 times, and move on to a new thought.
This is a way to pull our limiting beliefs out by the roots. The root being what the thought has to teach us, or how it is keeping us safe. Then you honor it, and remove it by the roots by thanking it and letting it go, releasing it, then replacing it with a fresh new perspective.
We can go years in our lives with these repeating patterns of thought that do not serve us in a positive way. We in many cases do not even know they exist, much less know what effect they have on our personal growth, relationships, success, and even self-worth.
Would you knowingly keep repeating a thought that hurts you? IF you knew you could EASILY change it? Can you imagine if you could sit down and program your mind with the exact thoughts that you want to think? Thoughts that you know will change your life in a positive way. So, tell me, why can’t you?
This is exactly how mindset work can help you. If you’ve ever spent any time with affirmations and positive thinking, you also probably know that you can repeat something like “I’m rich” over and over for 2 weeks and you don’t exactly wake up with $2 million in your bank account. If you do, then you probably don’t need to keep reading.
So, what’s missing with the average affirmation? It is the root, it is the feeling, the emotion. Just like with the limiting beliefs, you have to pull out the root of the weed, so to speak. With new thoughts, they have to grow roots to survive. You help them to grow by really understanding the new thought and how it FEELS. I can say “I’m rich” all day long, but until I can FEEL rich, I am not going to attract wealth into my life.
Change your mindset, change your life.
As you are planting the seeds of your new thoughts, water them, give them sunshine, and help them grow.
Let’s take something like “I am in amazing shape”. If you first look for what thought may contradict that. Then honor what it is doing, perhaps keeping you safe. Then release it (pull it out by the roots). Saying “I am in amazing shape”, may at first feel like a lie. However, if you can get into the feeling of being in amazing shape, it will begin to grow roots. Take a look at this, for example:
- I am in amazing shape
- My clothes fit so well
- Looking in the mirror I feel so proud of myself
- I love shopping now, everything fits so well
- Being on the beach I feel amazing in my bikini
- My husband keeps telling me how amazing I look
- I even double take when I walk by a mirror
- Getting into shape was so much easier than I thought it would be
- I really enjoy my daily walks now
- I have more energy
- I am eating better
- I am really enjoying my life more overall
- I am in amazing shape
See how that felt? Did you feel the feeling of being in shape? Rather than just saying an empty affirmation, actually feeling it in your body gives a reference, and essentially roots for the new thought to grow.
Give it a try.
